Leadership & Scaling
The Owner's Exit Ramp: Leadership & Scaling Beyond the Truck
A leadership plan for stepping out of daily field work and into running the company, with revenue growth to match.
Who This Course Is For
Owners ready to stop being the bottleneck and build something that can run, and grow, without them on every job.
There's a specific kind of tired that comes from owning a trade business where you're still the highest-paid technician on your own crew. Revenue has grown. The truck count might have grown. But your role hasn't changed — you're still on every big job, still the one clients ask for by name, still the person everything routes through. That's not a business yet. It's a very demanding job you happen to own.
The Owner's Exit Ramp is built around the Technician → Manager → Owner framework that runs through this entire school. It's not about exiting the trade or selling the company — it's about exiting the daily grind of being the one irreplaceable part of the operation, and building a leadership layer and a set of goals that let the business run, and grow, without you personally carrying every job on your back.
The Outcome
What you'll walk away with
A leadership plan for stepping out of daily field work and into running the company, with revenue growth to match. You'll leave with a clear map of what to delegate first and how to do it without losing quality, a plan for identifying and developing your first crew leads or office manager, a short list of KPIs that actually tell you how the business is doing, a framework for evaluating growth decisions like adding a truck or a service line, and a straight answer on what it means to finally get paid like the owner of a company instead of its most senior employee.
The Curriculum
Six modules. The school's core framework, applied to your business.
The Technician → Manager → Owner shift (the school's core framework)
Every course in this school ties back to one idea: the shift from Technician (you're the best at the actual work, and the business runs because you personally do everything) to Manager (you build systems and a crew so the work doesn't only happen through you) to Owner (the business runs on systems and people, and you get paid to run the company). This module lays out the framework in full and helps you honestly locate where you are on it right now.
Delegation: what to hand off first, and how to let go without losing quality
Most owners either delegate nothing (because "nobody does it right") or delegate the wrong things first and get burned. This module covers a practical order of operations for handing off responsibility — starting with the tasks that free up the most of your time for the least quality risk — and how to let go of a task without letting go of the standard.
Building your first management layer (crew leads, foremen, office manager)
You can't be the only manager forever. This module walks through building your first layer of leadership — crew leads, foremen, or an office manager — including how to identify who on your current team is ready for more responsibility, how to set them up to actually succeed in it, and what changes about your own role once that layer exists.
Setting goals and KPIs that actually drive the business
"Grow the business" isn't a goal you can act on. This module covers picking a small number of KPIs that actually reflect what's happening in your business — not vanity numbers — and setting goals tied to them, so you and your new management layer are steering by the same dashboard instead of gut feel.
Planning growth: adding trucks, crews, or service lines without breaking what works
Adding a truck, a crew, or a new service line can either be the next stage of growth or the thing that breaks what's currently working. This module covers how to evaluate expansion decisions against your current systems and cash position, so growth is a deliberate move instead of a reaction to a busy season.
Owner mindset: getting paid like an owner, not the highest-paid technician
The final module addresses the mindset shift underneath all of this: getting paid like an owner of a company, not like the highest-paid technician on your own crew. That means understanding the difference between owner's pay and business profit, and building a company whose value doesn't disappear the day you stop showing up to the jobsite.
Is This Course Right For You
Let's be specific about who this helps
This course is for you if:
- ✓Owners ready to stop being the bottleneck and step back from daily field work
- ✓Owners who have a crew but haven't yet built a real management layer beneath themselves
- ✓Owners who want the business to grow in revenue and in value, not just in hours worked
This isn't the right fit if:
- ✕Solo operators with no plans to bring on help — this course assumes you're building a team
- ✕Owners looking to exit or sell immediately — this is about building leadership capacity, not a sale process
- ✕Anyone unwilling to hand off tasks they currently believe only they can do
Format & Delivery
How this course works
The Owner's Exit Ramp is delivered online and self-paced, built around the reality that leadership decisions — who to promote, what to delegate, when to expand — happen on your schedule, not a course calendar. Each module comes with practical tools, not just video lessons, so you're building your actual delegation plan and KPI list as you move through the material.
Leadership and delegation are also often where owners benefit most from direct accountability rather than working alone. This course is part of the full curriculum inside the Accelerator, which pairs this material with live coaching. Contact us for current details on pricing and format for either path.

Frequently Asked Questions
Questions about The Owner's Exit Ramp
Who is Blue Collar Business School for?
Trade business owners — roughly $150K to $5M in revenue — who are excellent at the work itself but were never trained on the business side, and who are ready to build real systems rather than keep running on instinct.
What's the difference between the individual courses and the Accelerator coaching program?
The individual courses are self-contained curriculum you work through on your own. The Accelerator bundles the full curriculum with direct coaching and accountability for owners who want guidance, not just material.
How fast should I expect to see results in my business?
It depends on the course, your business, and how quickly you implement what you learn — results come from applying the material, not just watching it.
How does Josh's insurance agency background relate to this training?
Running a commercial insurance agency for 50+ contractor trades gives Josh a unique view into what separates trade businesses that scale successfully from those that stay stuck — patterns in pricing, staffing, and operations he now teaches here. Blue Collar Business School doesn't sell or reference insurance products.
